New foster care service helps children maintain cultural links

The program is the first of its kind in NSW, where a multicultural not-for- profit organisation has been contracted to develop and deliver a culturally appropriate model of foster care.

Ms Goward acknowledged SSI management and staff for their passion and commitment to providing a loving home for vulnerable children, allowing them to stay connected with their culture and language.

“I am grateful to the dedicated staff at this service for their hard work to meet the complex and challenging needs of these young people,” Ms Goward said.

SSI CEO Violet Roumeliotis said: “The establishment of the Multicultural Foster Care Service is the result of years of developmental work by SSI. Our organisation has long recognised the need for a culturally appropriate model of out-of-home care services for CALD children and young people.

“We believe CALD children in care are strengthened through knowing about and having connections with their cultural heritage. These connections play an important role in identity, development and sense of belonging.  It can take many forms and includes being supported to learn about and participate in their culture, community, language, and religion.

“This belief is strongly reflected in the support our service provides to children and young and carers,” Ms Roumeliotis added.
